Why buckwheat

Better in nearly every category. Honest about the rest.

Nine head-to-head reasons buckwheat outperforms the base most plant drinks are built on. Every claim is drawn from the peer-reviewed nutrition, environment and agronomy literature — with the two categories where buckwheat doesn't win called out at the bottom.

01

Complete protein — highest biological value of the set

All nine essential amino acids, biological value ~93. Lysine-rich, where every cereal-based drink is lysine-poor.

vs. oat ~55 · soy ~74
02

Blood-sugar friendly

Low-to-medium glycaemic index around 50, well under oat and rice. High amylose and resistant-starch content mean less sugar spike per glass.

vs. oat ~69 · rice ~86
03

Zero of the 14 EU top allergens

Buckwheat is a pseudocereal — botanically unrelated to wheat. Naturally gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free. The only mainstream plant-milk base that is all three at once.

unique
04

Clean label, no GMO risk

No GMO buckwheat variety exists anywhere. Fewer processing steps than oat, which means a shorter ingredient list you can read out loud.

non-GMO by nature
05

Highest iron of the set

10.5–13.9 mg iron per 100 g raw grain, plus meaningful zinc and magnesium. A real mineral contribution, not a fortification story.

highest of all bases
06

Naturally contains rutin

Buckwheat is the only plant-milk base that naturally contains rutin, a bioflavonoid studied for its cardiovascular properties.

exclusive to buckwheat
07

Low-impact crop

Grown rain-fed, no synthetic pesticides needed, no fertiliser required on decent soil. A tiny fraction of almond's water footprint (~371 L/L) and rice's (~270 L/L).

less water than almond & rice
08

A regenerative story that isn't marketing

A magnet for 100+ pollinator species. Feeder crop that raises soil organic matter by ~35% over conventional rotation. Real agronomy, not a claim on a carton.

European-grown & independent

Sourced from Poland and, longer term, Brandenburg — not California or Xinjiang. Independent of Blackstone (Oatly) and Danone (Alpro). No dedicated buckwheat drink competes in DACH yet.

Honesty note

Where buckwheat doesn't win — and we'll say it plainly.

Two categories where oat is genuinely ahead: (1) built-in fibre and beta-glucan — oat has more; buckwheat is decent, not a leader. (2) Barista foam and UHT shelf stability out of the box — buckwheat needs deliberate formulation to match oat's default performance. We're doing the formulation work.
